Katherine could not possibly scatter all of the falling poles or flailing cables - there were far too many for that - but she at least got the ones most likely to be a problem out of the way for the moment, buying the children time to run -
yes, show me more
- only for a sudden tremor to shake the ground. In a swift series of motions that demonstrated far too much practice, the girl shifted her feet and, clenching her teeth, threw the boy she'd been dragging along... just as a chasm opened up in front of them. He sailed well over the gap, but she had compromised her footing already, and the ledge she now stood upon was collapsing.
of that defiant spirit of yours!

Except, Katherine was already moving again, her 'grasp' closing around the girl and chucking her across the gap as well. She was panting, unsure how she was throwing out this much power so suddenly, but welcoming it. She launched herself across the chasm as well, falling to her knees next to the kids, and forcing herself up, trying to pull them up with her. "C-come on... we have to keep moving..."

ah, how naive

Just before Katherine grasped the children's hands -
- the poles finished falling, landing all around them and -
-the cables whipped forward of their own initiative-
-and wrapped viciously around the girl's torso.

It's hard to say whether or not there were any tears.

Thousands of volts of electricity coursed through her form as she was pulled away, screaming.

this is reality, you know!

- she saw it coming. No... Like the crevice and the poles and the girders her instincts had remembered, her mind knew now. She'd seen the scene to come once before, but would that now be once again?

Katherine froze in place for a moment, staring in horror at the spot where the girl had just been. "N-no..." After a moment, however, she gripped the boys hand, swallowing hard. "Gotta.... keep moving..." She staggered to her feet, her grip on his hand uncharacteristically tight, her mind reeling as she slowly started to realize... she could remember. Not fully, but she could remember... flashes. She thought she was reacting with instinct, but instead she was reacting with knowledge from a previous attempt. Previous failures.

But even as Katherine gripped it, the boy's hand disappeared. The world whirled and shifted and everything went forward in reverse as the cables released the girl who fell to the ground then over the chasm to land neatly and step back away with mechanical precision. Everything moved backwards throughout the entire scene until suddenly Katherine couldn't see anything more as she herself exited the stage and -

- she woke up in the dan's Secret Base again. Like the time before it, Marry wasn't there.

This time, she knew why.

Katherine let out a shuddering breath... and then bolted out of the bed, through the apartment, and out into the world again. She reached out with her powers to find the kids again... the kids... no... they had names. What were their names? She knew them, she'd heard them at some point, what were they?! More importantly, she needed to find them, quickly!

As Katherine races through the city, it shifts and turns chaotically. As difficult as it was to navigate before, now it seems all but impassable. At one point, she took a turn only to find herself staring at the same storefront a dozen times a row. Worse, her empathy seemed muted, as if it were choking in a mire of malice and contempt.

Katherine tensed, and focused more of her power on understanding what Ayano was trying to tell her. Hoping she could tell her... something.

"You're so close - it's trying really hard right now. There's not much time left!" | concern, worry

Even as Katherine managed to hear Ayano's frantic urging, it came only as a faint whisper amidst the chaos of the street churning and warping about, seeking to wall her in. It was beginning to look like she'd have to start breaking things to make her way through, but she couldn't do that, right?

Maybe she could. Maybe she couldn't. She'd seen already that she was capable of more than she'd originally believed. With determination, a belief in Ayano's words that she could do this, and an unfamiliar, ever building feeling of rage at the attempts to stop her, Katherine surged forward, focusing her all on locating the kids.

And on eliminating whatever the hell tried to stop her. If she'd been in the right frame of mind to think about it, she'd be confused, and worried, over this sudden surge of determination and anger. She didn't even realize she was mumbling under her breath. "...thinks this will stop me... crush that little snake..."

Power gathered; as wisps of wind forming into a vortex of wrath and anger. It started slowly, but escalated ever quicker. First, with motes of dust and grainy rock. Then with shards of shattered glass, and brick and timber and even steel. The cityscape began to crumble apart, caught in a locus of ruinous power as Katherine advanced. Where the ground rose up, it was smashed flat, and where it sank away, debris carried her over the gap. The very world seemed to shake terribly, coming further and further apart...

...until suddenly, it snapped.

The world stretched like a rubberband only for the ends to slam together, conjuring a monumental gust that flung Katherine backward through the streets. Everything seemed to disintigrate - even the grainy remains of shattered glass and stone vanished before Katherine's power could reach it, and so she flew through yawning darkness without a single guidepost, with the distant visage of the city rushing faster and faster by until -

- she was caught.

There was so much and so little to keep track of - such tumultuos chaos - that for a moment, Katherine could not identify the blurred features of her impromptu savior. The pull on Katherine's body grew larger by the moment, and she could feel her savior's grip slipping.

"I can't hold you!" Ayano cried, with tears gathering in her eyes, "I know I can't hold you... but... I have to tell you... Please-" Ayano's grip on Katherine's arm gave out for a moment, and her hand slid to clasp Katherine's palms. "-this time, absolutely-" she came to the fingertips, "-this time, no matter what-"

And Katherine was "free," once more at the mercy of the wind. Hoarsely, Ayano screamed, her voice lost in the wind, but her thoughts and emotion carrying regardless:

"Don't forget what happened this day."
| -DESPERATION-|

How could she forget it? Perhaps if she possessed sight, the visage Ayano's exhausted form resting on her knees at the brink would be seared into her memory. Alas, that hazy figure with tears in its eyes would have to suffice.

Without fanfare, as Katherine fell securely inside its maw, the yawning earth snapped closed.

Katherine sat bolt upright in bed, panting heavily as she instinctively pulsed her perception, taking in her surroundings. After a moment, she started to relax. Good. She was at home in bed in the estate, exactly where she... should be? She hesitated, shifting a bit in bed. Something felt... wrong. She reached out for the small alarm clock next to her bed, resting her hand on it for a moment, allowing her to know that it was... only two in the morning. That was far too early to be getting up. She needed to get more sleep, if she wanted to spend time with the horses today. Shaking her head to try and clear the confusion that still seemed to have a firm grasp on her mind, she laid back down, curling up and going back to sleep.

She never even noticed that she'd been crying.

However - even as the blanket of sleep settled over it, Kathy's mind refused to rest...

She found herself in a park she recognized as the one from her childhood. Around her hazy shapes rushed back and forth. They seemed to flit and flicker, as if moving impossibly fast. Or maybe she was just far too slow? She stood at the edge of the park, her hand clasped within a familiar grip, her body leaning into a familiar presence.

"..."

What was that? She didn't understand. 'Could you say that again?' she wanted to ask, but the figure let go (or did it disappear)?  The scent of flowers tickled her nose, and she stumbled forward as that figure disappeared. Cold. She didn't realize how warm it was before, but for how cold it had now become. She shifted and shivered, forcing herself to her feet. Everyone was gone; all the shapes had disappeared, and the park loomed vacantly over her. It was so huge, and empty... was she ever this small?

"..."

She turned. A new figure had appeared, this one around her size (or was it larger? Smaller?). This one was different from the others, somehow. It didn't flicker, and it was... not the same. It was just as vague but... still Different. She couldn't really explain how. Still, she heard something again, didn't she? The figure held out its hand, speaking in a voice that tinkled like a bell to her memory. There was something lying within its palm... Her hairclip! When did she lose it? Eagerly (frantically?) reaching for it, she grasped it in her hand and -

"..."

That person was gone. Where did they go? A harsh wind shook the entire park, and she cried out as it carried her away. Up, up, and further up she went until she landed on a cloud. Someone stood outside, walking away, and she tried to rush after them but something barred her way. It pulled at her ankle and she fell, and fell, and continued falling further still. She fell so long, she might've forgotten she was falling, if someone new hadn't caught hold of her hand.

"..."

She was lifted up onto a cliff (a fence?), and her savior's hazy figure smiled and raised its thumb. She smiled back, and the figure frowned and suddenly pushed her over. She cried out in surprise as -

*BANG*

What? - something soaked through her shirt, and she gasped in shock. It had little time to set in before the world flickered. And she was suddenly thrown aside. She focused, trying to understand what was -
(-was happening?)

*BANG*

What?! - happening. She was led being led by the hand and someone knelt, urging her to be quiet until -
(-was she missing?)

*BANG*

What?! - she missed something. She missed everything. A clock ticked somewhere she didn't care to know. She was numb and soaked and her eyes were raw from crying. Her voice was hoarse from screaming. She was in a valley - a pit - surrounded by hazy figures, lying on the ground. There were so many of them. So many, so many... One was standing, and she -
(-couldn't she remember?)

*BANG*

- woke up.

Katherine once more sat bolt upright in bed, panting heavily as she awoke. Once more, she tried to calm her breathing as she checked her surroundings. Once more, she checked her clock. Now was a much more reasonable time to get up though, so she went about her usual routine of getting dressed. However, as she went on with her daily routine for the morning, something was horribly odd. While she had done these things day after day, something felt off about the whole thing. Especially when she walked past the lounge and heard the television spouting some news story that seemed oddly familiar. Or when she ate breakfast, and her father got onto her for holding a fork wrong because she was so focused on not holding her knife wrong for some reason, or when her mother slipped her a candy when her father wasn't looking.

When she snuck out a bit later to visit the horses and encountered some squirrels chasing each other around a tree, she somehow knew that one of the squirrels was going to turn and run toward her, so she knelt down and it ran right up her outstretched arm. Finding herself with a new pet squirrel for a reason she could not begin to fathom, she continued on to the stable.

And when she heard a strange noise nearby after spending time with the horses, she found herself drifting toward the perimeter wall... and then running over to it, only to trip and fall flat on her face just as a girl vaulted over the fence.

At least there was nothing too bizarrely familiar about the squirrel that was now sitting on her head.
